Thames & Kosmos Mechanical Engineering STEM Kit 8+ years 132 pieces simple mechanism construction
The Thames & Kosmos Mechanical Engineering STEM kit invites children to discover mechanical physics through hands-on play. The set starts with simple mechanisms and shows how they transform complex tasks into easily achievable operations. Through 26 model-building exercises, the child investigates all six classic simple machines - wheels and axles, levers, pulleys, inclined planes, screws, and wedges - as well as gears.
The child begins with simple models to ensure a complete understanding of the principles, then advances to larger and more complex models. A specially designed spring scale is included so that one can measure how machines change the direction and magnitude of forces, making work easier. With this modular construction system, one can see how the same basic elements combine in different ways to form each machine.
The models can be assembled and disassembled again and again; the parts combine to create your own configurations, limited only by imagination. In addition to the hands-on experience gained from building the models, the 32-page color manual presents examples of simple machines in action in everyday life. A playground seesaw, a backyard wheelbarrow, and a schoolyard flagpole are all examples of real-world simple mechanisms.
The set transforms abstract concepts from physics textbooks - force, energy, motion - into visual and palpable experiments. The assembly process trains problem-solving skills and attention to detail, while manipulating small components, fitting gears, and aligning axles develops dexterity and fine coordination. The kit was awarded the 2019 Parents' Choice Gold Award and is produced in Taiwan for Thames & Kosmos, England.
