WHY IS CHOOSING THE RIGHT BREAST PUMP ATTACHMENT CUP SIZE IMPORTANT?

Breast cups are sometimes also called flanges. While comfort is often the determining factor in choosing the right size, using the correct size breast shield will also make pumping more efficient. Pumping can be difficult enough on its own, but having an ill-fitting cup can affect the amount of milk you can pump. It's good to remember that the correct breast shield size can change throughout your pumping and breastfeeding journey, so it's a good idea to occasionally check if you are still using the right size. Or you might find that your breasts need different cup sizes - and that's normal. Remember, pumping should be a positive thing, helping the mother!

GETTING THE CORRECT DIMENSIONS

• The starting point for choosing the correct breast cup size is determined by the nipple's diameter.
• If your nipple measures under 17 mm in diameter, the recommended breast shield size is 21 mm.
• If your nipple measures under 20 mm in diameter, the recommended breast shield size is 24 mm.
• If your nipple measures under 25 mm in diameter, the recommended breast shield size is 27 mm.

TEST THE SIZING

Since breast cup size also depends on breast tissue and skin elasticity, it's important to check that you have chosen the correct size.

Here's how to check:

• Using the 24 mm shields included with the pump (or the size chosen after measuring your nipples), center your nipple and gently hold the breast cup (Note: pressing the cups too hard on your breasts when pumping can block your milk ducts)
• Adjust the breast pump vacuum, through stimulation to a slightly uncomfortable vacuum, then down one level, to be comfortable
• When the cup fits correctly, the nipple will be centered in the breast shield tunnel and will move freely during pumping.

TROUBLESHOOTING
We recommend resizing the cup if you experience the following:

• Your nipple rubs the sides of the cup tunnel to the point of causing discomfort.
• You see that the areola is excessively pulled into the cup tunnel.
• You have redness on or at the base of the nipple during and/or after pumping.
• The areola or nipple turns white after pumping.
