Thames & Kosmos STEM Solar System Kit 6 years plastic orrery

The Thames & Kosmos Solar System STEM kit sets the planets in motion with a simple flick of the wrist. You build a mechanical model of the solar system, also known as an orrery, which includes the sun and eight planets, rotate it, and watch the planets revolve around the sun. Assembling this complex mechanism shows how gears and the wind-up mechanism that turns the model work.

The child discovers how a special type of gear called a planetary gear is used to simulate the fascinating motion of the solar system. Learn about the order of the planets, their relative sizes, their rates of revolution around the sun, their appearance, and other planetary facts. Each planet is detailed with colorful, realistic printed graphics, and there is even a built-in expansion slot in case the mysterious Planet Nine is discovered.

The wind-up motor sets the planets in motion around the sun and requires no batteries, so the kit works without additional consumables. Through play, the child learns about the celestial orbits of the planets and explores fundamental gear mechanics: the planets move at different speeds depending on the gear ratio. The set contains 59 pieces and a manual with illustrated, step-by-step, color assembly instructions.

The kit is made of plastic. The recommended age is 6+ with adult assistance and 8+ independently. WARNING: Contraindicated for children under 6 years, contains small parts, choking hazard. Adult supervision is recommended while playing. Read the instructions before use, follow them, and keep them for reference. The product is manufactured in Taiwan for Thames & Kosmos, England.
